Out near Lakeway, this homeowner had a long stretch of open property between the road and the house - and nothing clean or functional to drive on. Bare dirt driveways out here get chewed up fast, especially with Texas clay and the kind of rain that rolls through the Hill Country. So we came out, sized up the space, and got to work building something that would actually hold up.

We started with full site prep using a Takeuchi TL6R track loader to grade and clear the area before anything went down. Getting the base right is everything on a job like this - rush that step and you'll be fighting drainage problems and shifting gravel within a year. We laid weed barrier fabric first to keep growth from pushing through, then brought in 5/8" blackstar gravel for the surface. That size hits a sweet spot - it compacts well, drains well, and stays put under tires instead of kicking all over the place.

What really sets this one apart is the edging. We used 6" commercial grade edging along the full run of the driveway to lock the gravel in place and give it that clean, finished border. The difference between a gravel driveway with proper edging and one without it is night and day. Without it, gravel spreads into the yard, the edges get ragged, and the whole thing starts looking rough within a few months. With it, the shape holds and the gravel stays exactly where it's supposed to be.

The layout itself sweeps in a wide, curved loop - plenty of room to pull in, turn around, and come back out without any tight maneuvering. The concrete pad near the garage ties it all together, and the contrast between the light concrete and the dark blackstar gravel gives the whole front of the property a sharp, intentional look. It's functional and it looks good doing it.

This is the kind of work we do for properties in and around the Lakeway and Austin area - gravel driveways built with the right materials and done in a way that lasts. No shortcuts on the base, no thin edging that buckles in a season, and no gravel that's going to scatter every time someone pulls in.
